Spring with Emerson: Lynchburg, Virginia Photographer

Friends!! Are you guys loving this weather as much as I am? Probably not, because I'm obsessed! It seems like I had to wait SO long for the sunshine this year- I hope it's here to stay!!

We are thoroughly enjoying these longer days, the sunshine, trees in bloom, and the warmth!! Em has been begging me to be able to wear her 'down dresses' and tanks all winter- so she is thrilled to finally be able to wear those again!

A Very Happy Easter || Lynchburg, VA Photographer

You guys. Raising a 4 year old is no joke. She is constantly keeping us on our toes, making us laugh, is super emotional, and pushing boundaries.  But, it's seriously so fun. To see her learning, growing and goodness, the things she says is always cracking us up!

Em was so excited for Easter- and we were so excited to be able to participate in her egg hunt at school this year! She was thrilled when she realized that there was candy in some of those eggs!

Saturday night, she left out a plate of carrots for the Easter Bunny.  She wanted to give him more, but didn't know what he liked. So, she asked me to leave him a note so she would know for next time.  Girl can talk! and goodness my hand was hurting SO bad by the end of it! Tell me this isn't the cutest letter you've ever read! haha

Em was so excited that the Easter Bunny left her treats and hid some eggs around the house for her! He even gave her some books without words so she could read them all by herself!

I want to hear about your Easter weekend! Did you get in any good family time? Have an egg hunt, eat your weight in chocolate? hah.

Weekend Update: A Trip to Lynchburg Humane Society || Lynchburg, VA Photographer

Em had a few days off for a mini-spring break, and I had the best time spending all day with her!! One of the things that we did together was volunteer at the Lynchburg Humane Society! I got some photos of some of the sweetest animals, and we got to love on some sad puppies.  I swear, I need to buy a farm and adopt all these dogs! But... I already asked Michael, and no more animals in the house for us right now... so please, someone go adopt these animals!!

Taking Time Off: For Small Business owners || Lynchburg Wedding Photographer

Happy Friday Friends!! We are so excited for this weekend- and not just because this Saturday calls for 60 degrees! YES- you read that right!! I'm so excited because I have the weekend off- no babies to photograph at the hospital, no photoshoots or client meetings scheduled- just two entire days of no working! I'm so excited to be spending time with my family! This is going to be one of the last free weekends I have until after Easter, so to say I'm excited is a bit of an understatement! ;) Oh, but don't be too jealous- there's already talk of more snow next week. sigh. :/

Taking time off when you own your own business can be so difficult, but it's so important to take some time for yourself- and most importantly to me, for your family! I'm going to try my very best to unplug (haha easier said than done on my part!!) and enjoy this early Spring weather we're going to get! One of my big goals for 2016 is to schedule days off- and stick to it. This is one of the negatives that people don't really think about when they think of people owning their own businesses.  When you work a typical 9-5 job, you get to clock out, head home, and not think about the work needing to be done when you get back in the office on Monday morning.  A lot of times, I find myself using these "days off" to catch up on work, but for 2016 I'm going to be serious about recharging to avoid burnout! I know I'm not the only creative & small business owner that over-extends myself, says yes to way too many things, & stays up late when the creativity and motivation hits! I know, you guys, it's so difficult to take days off- to tell a client no, you don't have that day available- but I know in the long run, I will be so thankful for that scheduled time off!

Taking these breaks will make me a better photographer, friend, wife, and mom.  I never want to look back at my life and be thinking about how often I worked and how much of her little life that I missed.   So, dear fellow small business owner, I want to encourage you to take some time off! Schedule some unplugged, planned days off to spend with your friends and family. I promise you- you will not regret it!! And please, help keep me accountable too!! I know I'm going to need that accountability!

And, because I know that was a lot of words, here are some of my favorite photos from our family session with Lindsey Hinkley this past November.  (I know- shame on me for not sharing until now!!)

Lynchburg Humane Society || Lynchburg Wedding and Portrait Photographer

Have you guys checked out the Lynchburg Humane Society yet? We seriously LOVE it there and are just so impressed with their facility and their seriously amazing staff.  We got our sweet pup from the Humane Society this past winter, (#manningthemutt), and we love visiting and loving on the sweet pets there! Me and Emmie were both SO excited when her class decided to take a field trip there! The first schedule trip got cancelled due to the snowstorm that shut schools here down for weeks.

The staff and volunteers at the Lynchburg Humane Society are so sweet, they had special activities with the kids and they got to run around and play with the puppies! It really was so much fun! Even if you aren't looking for a new pet, they always love for people to come visit the animals- and they are of course taking donations for food, toys, and blankets for the pets!
